The Overhead Crane Inspector Comprehensive examination portion of the CCO Crane Inspector certification program tests the following knowledge areas relating to overhead cranes:

Domain 1: Pre-Inspection Survey
Approximately 14% of test 

Domain 2: Records Review
Approximately 6% of test 

Domain 3: Visual Inspection
Approximately 50% of test 

Domain 4: Operational Testing
Approximately 17% of test 

Domain 5: Load Testing
Approximately 7% of test 

Domain 6: Post-Inspection
Approximately 6% of test 

DOMAIN 1: PRE-INSPECTION SURVEY

1. Interpret the standards and regulations applicable to crane inspection, including, but not limited to ASME B30
2. Interpret the standards and regulations applicable to crane inspection, including, but not limited to CMAA Specification 78
3. Interpret the standards and regulations applicable to crane inspection, including, but not limited to OSHA
4. Recognize what to communicate to the site supervisor/personnel on needs/requirements for inspection
5. Demonstrate basic crane terminology and definitions
6. Define specific lock-out/tag-out procedures/requirements

DOMAIN 2: RECORDS REVIEW

1. Recognize if given documentation is correct
   1. Application
   2. Maintenance
   3. Engineering
2. Identify which inspection records are required
3. Demonstrate how to verify that the following have been performed with acceptable documentation:
   1. Repairs
   2. Modifications/alterations
   3. Qualifications of repair person
   4. Timeliness of repair
   5. Wire rope certifications
4. Recognize crane capacity as it relates to crane configuration
1. Multiple trolleys
2. Permanently attached material handling devices

DOMAIN 3: VISUAL INSPECTION

1. Identify the following conditions:
   1. Proper weld
   2. Excessive corrosion
   3. Additional non-destructive testing
2. Recognize proper operation of:
   1. Safety devices
   2. Operational aids
3. Evaluate and assess wire rope, including:
   1. Construction and specifications
   2. Rejection criteria
   3. Reeving specifications
   4. Termination hardware
      
4. Recognize existing or potential problems
5. Identify modifications and alterations
6. List and employ the manufacturer’s requirements
   1. Inspection
   2. Maintenance
   3. Service requirements
   4. Limitations
7. Identify and inspect systems, including but not limited to:
   1. Pneumatic
   2. Hydraulic
   3. Mechanical
   4. Electrical
   5. Structural
8. Identify the requirements for component guarding  
9. Recognize and demonstrate inspection criteria for:
   1. Hooks
   2. Load blocks
   3. Sheaves
   4. Drums
10. Define inspection requirements for operator controls:
    1. Pendant
    2. Radio/remote
    3. Cab
11. Identify the following for job site situations:
    1. Assist equipment (e.g., aerial work platform)
    2. Tools
    3. Personal protective equipment (PPE)
12. Identify and inspect travel systems:
    1. Tire requirements
    2. Wheels and end trucks
    3. Runway systems
13. Verify capacity markings of cranes
    

DOMAIN 4: OPERATIONAL TESTING

1. Identify crane signals
   1. Hand signals
   2. Voice signals
2. Define control characteristics/functions:
   1. Control characteristics/functions
   2. Operating parameters/dynamic effects

DOMAIN 5: LOAD TESTING

1. Identify the differences between types of load tests, including:
   1. Rated load (i.e., brake test, dynamic/static load)
   2. Proof load
   3. Load limiters
2. Indicate the requirements for full operation of bridge and trolley movements

DOMAIN 6: POST-INSPECTION

1. Identify and demonstrate that the inspection/test procedure(s) did not cause damage per regulations and manufacturer’s requirements
2. Document/communicate the deficiencies and recommendations on the final report
3. Identify responsible parties involved in or pertaining to the post-inspection
