TSS/STC Frequently Asked Questions

As a TSS-certified operator, you may have noticed your new certification card and your record as shown on www.verifycco.org also lists CCO’s new “STC” designation on it. You may wonder why. Here are some answers to questions you may have.

What does “STC” stand for?

STC stands for “Service Truck Crane.” Having it on your card means you are certified to operate the type of smaller cranes found on service and mechanics’ trucks.

Why does my card list “STC” on it?

The CCO Service Truck Crane Operator certification (STC) is a subcategory of the Telescopic Boom—Fixed Cab certification (TSS) and was developed for operators who use these smaller machines. Since crane operators holding TSS certification are also certified to run service truck cranes by virtue of already being certified in TSS, all TSS-certified operators also have STC listed on their cards when first certified or at recertification.

What do you mean by a “service truck crane”?

Service truck cranes are telescopic boom cranes, where the base and mast structure is not integral to the stabilizer/outrigger system. These machines tend to have relatively shorter boom lengths (10–35 ft) and lower capacities (1–7 Tons) as compared to boom trucks or carry-decks. Operation is usually by radio remote or pendant control with the operator standing on the ground following the load.

What if my CCO card shows “TSS” but doesn’t currently show “STC”; am I certified to run service truck cranes?

Yes. You are still certified for STC. If you need to show proof, you have two options.

  • Visit NCCCO’s Verify CCO Online (VCO) system at www.verifycco.org which will show your STC credential and is considered valid proof of certification.
  • Order an updated CCO card by visiting nccco.org/newcard. You will be charged a $25 fee.
